Hindu Weddings

Hindu weddings are many photographers favorite to capture, and for good reason!

With all the beautiful details, and spiritual significance Hindu ceremonies have to offer, they are a visual treat!

There are several customs and rituals within the Hindu marriage ceremony.  They can often go on for hours, even days in a traditional Hindu wedding in India!

As I learned with Tina and Ashok’s week long wedding extravaganza I recently photographed in Bangalore.  Enough action to keep a photographer on his toes for a while!

There are also smaller family ceremonies (Pujas) leading up to the wedding day itself.  However todays modern couples usually opt for a shortened version, I think it is so great to keep the traditions alive.

I have assembled here a few of my favorite Hindu wedding photos from various ceremonies.

They say the darker the Henna the stronger the grooms love is for his bride!

The wedding day starts with a prayer invoking Lord Ganesh whose divine grace dispel all evils and promotes a successful and peaceful completion of the ceremony.

The Bride and Groom welcome each other with beautiful floral garlands

The Bride and Groom make an offering of rice or flowers to the holy fire (Laja homa)

Saptapadi - The bride and groom take seven steps together. One of the most significant parts of the ceremony

Shilarohana (stepping on the stone) The bride places her right foot on a stone.

A Journey Through the Eyes of Hope

A Photographic fundraiser benefiting Asha for Education.

Syril - Tamil Nadu

A photograph is a stunning reminder of how much we take our senses for granted.

Andrew Adams has captured many Indian weddings locally and abroad over the last decade.  After his first soul-searching trip around India, he found himself transformed by the culture that is seeped in tradition and humanity. He decided to take his passion beyond capturing the happy memories of a wedding day. This time he would dedicate his creative talent towards a humanitarian cause in India. He joined Asha for Education on a personal mission to support the children in India who are at deep social disadvantage. This project focuses on making education possible for these children, since it is through this that socio-economic change can arise in India. Andrew wanted to see first hand the work being done through the support of Asha so while on his second wedding assignment in India he paid a visit to a school for blind children in Bangalore and several daycare centres, and schools in Delhi and Tamil Nadu.  He was deeply enriched by what he witnessed on this journey, and wanted to find a way to make a difference using his photographs.  Andrew will be donating 100% of the proceeds from fine art print sales of this exhibit.   The most significant aim of this creative project is public awareness for the economic impact upon the children, who are India’s future.

The lens is the eye of the photographer, but in this photographic exhibit it is also the very heart of a compassionate storyteller.

A selection of fine art prints will be available for sale at Masala! Mehndi! Masti! July 23-25, 2010, Toronto.

For a preview of the festival check out this video clip from Breakfast Television featuring a few of my favorite images to be sold.

FIne art prints will also be available to purchase following the event.

Guri and Shaffreen’s pre wedding warm up session

A great way for my couples to get to know me a bit is during our pre wedding day photo session.

Sometimes the wedding day itself is so rushed, and it goes so quickly that it becomes a blur to the Bride and Groom.

I highly recommend having a separate photo session either before the wedding day itself, or the day after is nice too!

This way you can truly relax, be yourselves and let your personalities show without the time constraints often presented on the wedding day.

Guri and Shaffreen were so cool, casual, and so much fun to be with!  Can’t wait to be there on the big day!

A Gujarati Wedding in Ahmedabad

Medha and Palak live in the US, with many of their friends and family spread all over the world.  But with most of their family in Gujarat, India it seemed only natural to have the wedding in Ahmedabad.

The first evening was the Henna. I have never seen such beautiful, intricate Henna like Medha had.  The second night was the Garba, A Gujarati tradional Stick dance!  Everyone got up and joined in the fun!

The final day, consisted of a morning Puja ceremony, followed by the Baraat.  Palak’s procession on an Elephant! Colorful, and LOUD!  Then it was into the Grand Baghwati ballroom for the evening Hindu Ceremony.

What a Joyous event to photograph. Filled with some beautiful details, intense colors and warm heartfelt emotions.  I loved every moment!  Medha and Palak, and their families were so kind and I really felt like a welcomed guest, and not just the hired photographer!

Congratulations Medha and Palak!

Sri Lankan Weddings

As a wedding photographer I have to say that some of the most memorable weddings I have photographed are Sri Lankan weddings.

They are always very colorful and joyful celebrations.

Within Sri Lanka you will find many faiths including; Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim.

Most Sri Lankan weddings have some common elements unique to the culture.

During the ceremony a tray holding the marriage necklace or Thali, and the Koorai (wedding Sari) is passed around to the guests to be blessed

The bride usually wears a stunning viel of gold with either her Sari or Western style Dress (Christian).

The groom ties the wedding necklace (Thali) around the Bride’s neck signifying they are now married.

A very important moment in the ceremony, the music grows louder, with live drummers and horn blowers, quite an exciting moment,

and then the guests stand and throw flowers at the newly married couple to wish them a happy life together.

If your thinking of having your wedding in Sri Lanka, you can’t go wrong.  Sri Lanka offers some of the most beautiful beaches, and top 5 star resorts

to host your wedding, such as the Taj Exotica in Bentota.

A beach wedding in Goa

I returned to Goa for some much needed R&R after photographing Tina and Ashok’s week long wedding in Bangalore.

Goa really is photographers paradise. I can see why it is such a popular wedding destination.

Goa is a place where people love to get married. You will find some of the finest 5 star luxury hotels such as the Leela, Park Hyatt Resort & Spa, Goa and the Taj Holiday Village, each drawing crowds from Bollywood film stars and Bombay socialites. Goa has perfect prestine beaches, especially in the South and some in the North too.

Many of these fine hotels also offer wedding services, on the beach or pool side.  But if you are thinking of  having a destination wedding,
it may seem a bit overwhelming when you are trying to plan your dream wedding from abroad.   I highly recommend hiring a qualified and
experienced Wedding planner.

On my last trip to Goa I had the pleasure to meet with Lester Melo, Creative Director of  Weddings and Dreams. Lester has catered to a vast array of clientele, all with different tastes, ideas and visions.

along with the Weddings and Dreams team he will see your dream wedding through from start to finish. Paying attention to every detail, a very comforting aspect.

If your thinking of an exotic, destination wedding, think Goa! I leave you with some of my favorite beach wedding photographs to inspire your dream destination wedding!
